TV, VIDEO, HDTV over Cat5
Klicktv TV over Cat 5 products enable TV, video and HDTV to be distributed over structured cabling, providing all the functionality of coaxial cable based Cable TV and SMATV distribution systems without the need to install coaxial cable. The products work over Structured Cabling schemes based on Cat 5, cat 5e and cat 6 cabling (generically known as UTP cabling and commonly referred to simply as “Cat 5”).
TV and video distribution over structured cabling should not be confused with IPTV technology which distributes TV and video over data networks as streams of data which co-exist with other data on the network.
Why Cat 5? Cat 5 cabling is easy to install following straightforward rules and provides a flexible wiring infrastructure which can be used for a variety of purposes including data networking, broadband access, telephony and TV, video and audio distribution. Once installed, Cat 5 cabling can be comprehensively tested and certified using readily available test equipment providing a consistent infrastructure which can be relied upon to perform to a given standard. A Cat 5 link plus patch leads can be up to 100 metres. Cat 5 is cheaper than coaxial RF, HDMI, audio and video cabling for anything more than short interconnects. |
To distribute TV over Cat5, TV signals are first received and demodulated to baseband video + audio signals. For example, in the case of Freeview channels, the signal received by a TV antenna is processed by a Freeview Set Top Box (STB) to produce video + audio signals at its output. TYpically several sets of video + audio signals derived in this way are input to a Klicktv video over Cat5 switch matrix. Users connected to the output of the switch matrix via Cat5 cabling links can select the input they wish to view.
Klicktv TV over Cat 5 products for Standard Definition (SD) TV comprise a range of modular switch matrices with input/output configurations from 8x8 (8 inputs and 8 outputs) to 32x32. They are stacked to build switching systems to support up to 160 users. At the viewing point a small AV receiver interfaces to the TV. Channel selection is by IR remote control.
The systems operate with up to 250 metres of Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6 cable, and there is a "reverse path" facility which enables centrally located source equipment to be remotely controlled from the viewing point. This is illustrated in the diagram below where the Sky Set Top Box (STB) is controlled from the lower TV position.
The switch matrices are all 19” rack mount with internal power supply.
Klicktv HDTV over Cat 5 products for High Definition TV comprise a range of switch matrices with input/output configurations from 2x4 to 16x16 more...
