Video over Cat5
Structured Cabling schemes based on Cat 5, cat 5e and cat 6 cabling (generically known as UTP cable) are commonly installed to distribute voice and data services in the work place. Klicktv PRO series products enable video + audio (or TV signals demodulated to produce separate video and audio) to be distributed over structured cabling as well, dispensing with the need to install separate coaxial cables for TV distribution. Video distribution over structured cabling should not be confused with more sophisticated IPTV technology which distributes TV and video over data networks as streams of data which co exist with other data on the network.
The PRO series products comprise a range of modular switch matrices with between 8 and 32 inputs and 8 and 32 outputs. They are stacked to build switching systems which enable up to 32 sources to be accessed by up to 160 viewers. At the viewing point a small AV receiver interfaces to the TV. Channel selection is by IR remote control. The systems operate with up to 300 metres of Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
The products provide the functionality of coaxial cable based TV distribution systems (CATV, SMATV) with the advantages of using structured cabling in place of coaxial cable. In addition there is a "reverse path" facility which enables centrally located source equipment to be remotely controlled from the viewing point. This is illustrated in the diagram below where the Sky Set Top Box (STB) is controlled from the lower TV position.
If it is required to access Digital TV Freeview channels via the system, a Freeview STB is installed for each channel and the video + Audio output from the STB is connected to the input of the PRO switch.
PRO range switches are all 19” rack mount with internal power supply. The units are stacked to provide larger numbers of outputs.
